Natural Hand-Dyeing Process for Shawls
1. Sourcing Natural Dyes
We begin by collecting plant-based materials such as turmeric, indigo, madder root, or marigold petals — all sustainably harvested.
2. Preparing the Dye Bath
These natural ingredients are gently simmered in water over several hours to extract their rich, earthy colours. This slow boiling process releases the pigments without using any synthetic chemicals.
3. Pre-treating the Fabric (Mordanting)
The shawls are soaked in a natural mordant (like alum or tannin from tree bark) to help the fibres bond with the dye and improve colourfastness.
4. Hand-Dyeing
The pre-treated shawls are submerged in the warm, natural dye bath. They are stirred and soaked for hours, allowing the colour to develop slowly and evenly.
5. Rinsing and Drying
After dyeing, each shawl is carefully rinsed in clean water and hung to dry in the open air, preserving the natural character of the dye.
6. Finishing Touches
No synthetic fixatives are used. The final result is a unique, naturally dyed shawl — rich in tone, soft in texture, and kind to the Earth.
